DEBBIE ANGUS, CPA

Vice President, Audit

Debbie Angus has been Vice President, Audit for CHAN Healthcare Auditors since July 2001. Her career in healthcare internal audit began in 1991 when she joined the Daughters of Charity National Health System (DCNHS), now Ascension Health, as the Director of Audit for SETON Healthcare Network, a DCNHS local health ministry located in Central Texas. Ms. Angus’ management responsibilities increased when, in 1997, she assumed oversight of internal audit activities for all Ascension Health local health ministries in the southeastern United States.

In her current position, Ms. Angus is responsible for implementing the internal audit function at multiple CHAN clients in the mid-western and western United States. These clients range in size from a 42-hospital system covering three states to a stand-alone hospital in the southwest. Her focus is in assisting management and governance in identifying and addressing business risks and opportunities.

Ms. Angus champions CHAN’s efforts in identifying and disseminating Best Practices related to internal controls among its clients. This is an ongoing initiative to facilitate knowledge sharing. She recently directed the development of CHAN’s Business Process Self-Assessment Methodology, a tool designed to assist clients in assessing the effectiveness of their business processes and internal controls in specific compliance, financial and operational areas. In addition to self-assessment questionnaires, the methodology includes templates to guide management in addressing deficiencies.

Prior to working in healthcare internal audit, Ms. Angus’ career was focused in state taxation. Over a 13-year period, she held positions of increasing responsibility at the Texas State Comptroller of Public Accounts, in both the Audit Division and Tax Policy Division. Ms. Angus was a featured speaker to industry groups in the areas of sales and franchise taxes. Of her career move from taxation to healthcare, Ms. Angus agrees that the change may not have been a conventional one, but indicates that the two industries have many common callings: service, stewardship, and accountability to name a few.

Ms. Angus holds a bachelor of business administration from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and Healthcare Financial Management Association. Ms. Angus has a special interest in the aged, having held a Meals on Wheels delivery route for the past twelve years and volunteered at a local assisted-living facility.
