SHANNON SUMNER, CPA

Chief Quality Officer

Shannon Sumner began her career with CHAN in 1997. Since that time, she has seen CHAN grow from 75 associates to become the largest healthcare internal auditing company in the United States, with over 290 associates serving 350 health systems. Ms. Sumner’s responsibilities have included serving Ascension Health ministries in the roles of Audit Manager, Audit Senior Manager and Audit Director. Currently, she provides oversight of CHAN’s quality initiatives in all areas of CHAN’s Audit Framework such as risk assessment, audit performance and reporting, and assisting management and governance in strengthening enterprise risk management efforts.

Ms. Sumner’s interest in healthcare began immediately after college when she accepted an external auditor position for Pershing, Yoakley and Associates (PYA) in Knoxville, Tennessee where she specialized in audits of healthcare systems. In the mid 1990’s hospitals began acquiring physician practices as part of their growth strategies. As a result, while at PYA she also gained valuable experience in healthcare consulting by performing valuations of physician practices for use in mergers and acquisitions. This experience solidified her interest in healthcare operations.

Seeking opportunities to apply her experience directly in a hospital environment, Ms. Sumner accepted a position with CHAN serving Saint Thomas Health Services in Nashville, Tennessee. Over the years, her responsibilities have expanded from managing the audit function in Nashville, to oversight of CHAN associates in six other Ascension Health ministries across the United States. She has lead CHAN work teams with responsibility for the re-engineering of the risk assessment process, implementation of the risk management based audit approach and the development of the Auditors Discussion and Analysis report. Additionally, she has successfully integrated CHAN audit services into client acquired health systems, to include governance education regarding their roles and responsibilities. In 2008, she received CHAN’s CEO Award for Performance Excellence.

She is a CPA and has both a B.S. and a Masters Degree in Accounting (cum laude) from the University of Tennessee. She is a member of the American Society for Quality, Healthcare Financial Management Association and the Institute of Internal Auditors.  She holds an Accreditation in Internal Quality Assessment/Validation as established by the IIA.

Ms. Sumner’s community service involvement has included volunteering for various programs at Brentwood United Methodist Church in Brentwood, Tennessee.

These include the Partners in Hope cancer support ministry, Homebound ministry and the Andrew Minister program.
